THE ONE-ACT FESTIVAL & CHAPTER SELECT
The highly anticipated One-Act Festival returns showcasing high schools from across the state as they present their best theatrical performances. Participating troupes receive live feedback from professional judges, recognition for their participation, and the highest-scoring performances receive awards for their accomplishments at the Festival’s Closing Ceremony. The highest-scoring performance of all earns the coveted title of Chapter Select and the chance to take their performance all the way to the International Thespian Festival held at Indiana University Bloomington in the Ruth M. Halls Theatre!

Learn more about the Chapter Select program at the International Thespian Festival.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
During the registration process, Troupe Directors will register their troupe and all cast and crew members involved in the performance for the One-Act Festival.

In addition, Troupe Directors will be asked to complete a Google Form where they will be asked to upload the following items:

The One Act must be directed by either the Troupe Director or other member of staff at the participating school (Student-Directed productions are not permitted.)

Please note, because performance opportunities and venues are limited, Troupes will be assigned a performance venue on a first-come-first-served basis. For 2024, there will be 19 available performance slots. In the event that there are more applications than that - or if two schools apply with the same show - the date/timestamp of their (completed) Google Form submission will be used to determine the order. However, final approval is at the discretion of the Maryland Thespians Board of Directors and may be revoked at any time if there are concerns about any of the above.

PERFORMANCE VENUE
The Kogod and Dance Theaters at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, UMD will be used for the One-Act Festival. For 2024, we will also use a taped-off section of the Kay Theater (when not in use by the Mainstage Series). See 2024 Guide for acting area dimensions. (Coming Soon)

SCORING
To be chosen as Chapter Select, a One-Act must be adjudicated at the Maryland Thespian Festival and obtain the highest score using the Maryland Chapter One-Act Festival Rubric. The evaluation team will also select an alternate in case the chosen Chapter Select is unable to attend the International Thespian Festival.
