2023-2024 Maryland State Thespian Officers

State Thespian Officers serve as the voice for the entire student membership of Maryland's chapter of the International Thespian Society. The State Thespian Officers, or STOs for short, are appointed by members of the Maryland Thespians Board.

Students from any active Maryland Thespian Troupe are welcome to apply, regardless of whether their troupe director holds a board position. If multiple students from the same school apply, the board will select a maximum of one person per grade level. Each school is allowed, but not required, to have one Sophomore, one Junior, and one Senior representative, respectively. Typically, representatives are trained by their Senior peers throughout their journey, working towards higher leadership positions.

The STOs bring the needs of the state's thespians, along with new ideas and recommendations, to the State Board of Directors. They also play a pivotal role in planning for and running the State Thespian Festival, providing leadership training, teaching or assisting with workshops, sponsoring student-oriented functions, and fundraising.

Application Deadline June 1, 2024

  • What does it mean to be a State Thespian Officer? Well, it is an excellent way to socialize and meet others in Maryland with the exact same interests while being in a leadership role! You will also be able to have the opportunity to spread and amplify your love of theatre through different events at the Maryland Thespian Festival as well as through social media!

It does not matter whether you are someone who is usually on stage or is part of the behind-the-scenes action, anyone can apply to be a State Thespian Officer!

  • To me, being an STO is an amazing opportunity to be a leader and to build something you can be proud of. You get to create and build this amazing and large festival and meet so many amazing new people. It is also a great opportunity to just be a part of something bigger that you love. Getting to help grow and welcome the festival.

  • Being an STO is an engaging and exciting experience that brings people together in a fun way to express their love of theater. Whether it be on stage or with tech, everyone has a chance to learn, be a part of, and enjoy trying something new or doing something that they love with a community of people.

Maddie Slade, 2022-23 MD STO Secretary

  • Being an STO has given me so many unforgettable memories and given me the experience of a lifetime. As a STO’s we work to create, coordinate, and facilitate games and activities for the state festival, and really get to put our own personal flair on them.

Being a State Thespian Officer you get to work to set the tone for each, and every one of the students who come to enjoy the festival from doing the classic bucket run at the opening ceremony to waving everyone goodbye after the closing ceremony. Come join us to put your mark on The Maryland State Thespian Festival this year!

  • As an STO for MD Thespians I have made amazing friends and awesome memories. This program has given me the opportunity to spread awareness about an art I am extremely passionate about through the MD Thespian platform. Additionally, being an STO for the past few years has given me the opportunity to help with the creative vision for the festival each year which connects troupes across the state. Overall, being an STO has given me a chance to strengthen my leadership skills to give back to a theatre.

Victoria Marshal, 2022-23 MD STO President
